Remote Medical Billing & Coding Specialist

A Remote Medical Billing & Coding Specialist is responsible for translating patient medical records, physician notes, and clinical documentation into standardized alphanumeric codes used for insurance claims and medical billing. Working entirely from a home office, this specialist ensures that healthcare providers receive accurate and timely reimbursement for services rendered while maintaining strict compliance with healthcare regulations and insurance policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Documentation Review: Analyze medical charts, operative reports, diagnostic test results, and physician notes to extract accurate diagnoses, treatments, and procedures.

  • Medical Coding: Assign precise diagnostic and procedural codes using standard classification systems, such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.

  • Claim Generation & Submission: Prepare, review, and electronically submit clean insurance claims to private payers, Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party administrators.

  • Accounts Receivable & Denials Management: Track unpaid or denied claims, investigate the root causes of rejections, correct errors, and file appeals to maximize revenue collection.

  • Payment Posting & Patient Invoicing: Post insurance and patient payments, reconcile accounts, and generate clear patient statements or answer billing inquiries.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date with changing healthcare laws, billing guidelines, and payer-specific policies to ensure full adherence to HIPAA, local, and federal regulations.

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Certifications: Nationally recognized credentials strongly preferred, such as Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS).

  • Education: High school diploma required; completion of an accredited Medical Billing and Coding certification program or an Associate degree in Health Information Technology is preferred.

  • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems, practice management software, medical billing platforms, and encoder tools.

  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in data entry and code selection to minimize claim denials and compliance audits.

  • Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to interpret complex medical terminology, read physician charts, and resolve complex billing discrepancies independently.

  • Reliable Home Office Setup: A secure, HIPAA-compliant private workspace with a high-speed internet connection, dual monitors, and secure hardware as required by the employer.
