The Librarian 1 is an entry-level position within the Librarian job family and will support the Lakeshore Branch in Moreno Valley. The Librarian 1 works alongside members of the Library Management Team and other key stakeholders to support library programs, services, policies, procedures, and workflows. The Librarian 1 works alongside members of the Library Management Team and other key stakeholders to support library programs, services, policies, procedures, and workflows. With oversight from a senior Librarian, Branch Manager, or Director, the Librarian 1 works both independently and collaboratively with other staff to carry out projects, programs, and services that meet the needs of the Lakeshore Branch and the Moreno Valley community.

The Librarian 1 provides direct service to patrons, supports collection management and programming, assists with library resources and technology, and may provide guidance or supervision to Library Associates. Employment Type: Full-Time, non-exempt (hourly) Hourly Rate: $27.00 Hours Per Week: 40 Work Location: Lakeshore Branch – Moreno Valley, CA Work Arrangement: This is a fully on-site position. There is no opportunity for remote or hybrid work.

Primary Responsibilities

Coordinate and execute a variety of library programs, services, and initiatives that support the Lakeshore Branch and the community it serves. Provide high-quality customer service and assist patrons with reference questions, library resources, technology, and computer use. Support the development and delivery of programs and services that respond to the interests and needs of the Moreno Valley community.

Evaluate basic statistical data and prepare reports and surveys for the library, LS&S management, local government partners, and other stakeholders. Process, create, and edit bibliographic and item records for the library catalog. Maintain and update library social media and webpage content and may support social media needs of other branches. Provide readers' advisory services and assist patrons in identifying appropriate library materials and resources. Support and participate in the collection management process.

Serve on committees and may occasionally serve as a committee chairperson. May be responsible for opening and closing the library, handling and counting money, and completing daily cash reports. May provide guidance or supervision to Library Associates, including supporting performance management, evaluations, interviewing and hiring, training, scheduling, and approving timesheets.

Work collaboratively with branch staff and library leadership to support effective day-to-day operations and a welcoming library environment. Understand and administer the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library, while supporting client discretion regarding materials available at the library. Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and the custodianship of patron records. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MLS or MLIS degree required. One year of librarian experience preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of online library databases, resources, and services. Excellent customer service skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively and professionally with diverse populations. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends, based on branch operational needs. Regular and reliable attendance is a requirement of this position.

Physical Requirements

And Working Conditions This position requires regular, on-site presence at the Lakeshore Branch and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work. Ability to move throughout the library as needed to provide patron services, support programs, and perform assigned responsibilities. Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the library as needed.

Ability to lift, push, and/or pull items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds and occasionally up to thirty-five (35) pounds, including books, files, supplies, stacks of paper, and other library materials. Ability to sit for extended periods and maintain focus while working on a computer, reviewing documents, or completing detailed work. Work is primarily performed in a public library environment with regular interaction with patrons, staff, community partners, and visitors.

Regular use of computers, office equipment, library systems, and other library-related technology is required. May be required to work evenings and/or weekends based on branch operational needs.
