Copy Editor for 75-Page Beauty-Business Workbook and Future Book

This position will begin with a 75-page lead magnet/workbook for Black women beauty founders. The successful copy editor may then be hired to copyedit the full-length Big Beauty Guide manuscript.

The initial assignment will be hourly and is expected to require approximately 15–25 hours. The editor may not exceed 25 hours without prior approval. The initial weekly limit will be 10 hours.

The manuscript contains approximately 88, 942 words and is currently in Google Docs.

Scope of Work:

The copyedit will include:

Correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and usage.

Improving clarity and correcting awkward sentences while preserving the author’s distinctive voice.

Ensuring consistency in capitalization, terminology, headings, exercise titles, and reader instructions.

Reviewing repeated exercises to ensure that each version has a clear and distinct purpose.

Verifying the table of contents, heading hierarchy, internal references, and cross-references. Final pagination will be completed after design.

Creating and delivering a project style sheet documenting spelling, capitalization, punctuation, numerals, terminology, trademark usage, brand names, recurring exercise titles, editorial preferences, and intentional exceptions. The style sheet must be suitable for continued use when editing the full Big Beauty Guide manuscript.

Completing all edits using Suggesting mode in Google Docs.

Flagging questions, contradictions, or passages requiring the author’s decision.

Completing one follow-up cleanup pass after the author reviews the initial edits.

Outside the Scope

This assignment does not include:

Developmental editing

Major rewriting

Fact-checking or independent research

Graphic design, page layout, or Canva formatting

Final proofreading of the designed PDF

Ideal Editor

The ideal candidate has experience editing nonfiction books, business books, workbooks, educational materials, or lead magnets. Experience preserving a candid, conversational authorial voice is important. Familiarity with beauty, entrepreneurship, or content written for Black women founders is preferred but not required.

**Your availability for a small paid sample edit. Applicants selected for consideration may be invited to complete a paid sample using several representative pages from the workbook.

**The copyediting sample is paid for ONE HOUR. Compensation is a flat $50. Please stop after 60 minutes, record your actual time, and submit whatever you have completed. You are not expected to work beyond the paid hour.
